If you are going to be a permanent residence of Austria, you will need both a work permit and a residency permit. If your wife's company can organize both permits for you, you are all set. Having an Austrian residency permit will allow you to travel through all countries in the Schengan zone. Here you can read more about the Schengan Zone:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Ag…
If the residency and work permits are NOT organized for you, and if you are not a citizen of the EU, you will find it difficult to get these permits. In this case, consider setting up your own company which will hire you. Once you have your own company, this usually is enough to get residency and work permits. However, this will be costly and must be done with a lawyer.
Finally, with a US passport, you will be able to live in Schengan area for 90 days of 180 days with no visa at all. But after 90 days, you must leave the Schengan area. But if you are working and living there on a permanent basis, you should get residency and work permits. Otherwise, you will find things difficult in the long run.
